Excerpts

Getting Around in El Malpais Even today, few roads cross the broken surface of El Malpais. Visitors traveling by car are limited to skirting its north, east, and west edges along New Mexico Highways 53 and 117. Although vast expanses of lava flows can be seen all along New Mexico 117, few of the most spectacular volcanic features of the monument are visible from the highway. While it is possible to reach El Calderon cinder cone and Bandera Crater from short side roads off New Mexico 53, exploring other cinder cones, lava tubes, and flows requires a willingness to travel on unpredictable dirt roads and hike sometimes obscure trails.
