Summary

The word "preaching" has fallen on hard times. But this is nothing new. Even in the first century crowds grew tired of the hollow verbiage of the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law. But when Jesus arrives on the scene, things certainly do change. Even Luke observes that "all the people hung on his words" (19:48), and Mark records seven times that the people were amazed at his words. Did Jesus perform the antics of a TV evangelist? Was he able to tickle the ears of the people with what they wanted to hear? No. Jesus' sermons turn upside down our vision of the world and those around us. The preaching of Jesus is simply astounding.
