Chapter One
ÓRDENES DE AMOR
¡Ten piedad de nuestro amor
y cuídalo, oh Vida!
Carlos Pellicer
1
Amor mío, embellécete.
Perfecto, bajo el cielo, lámpara
de mil sueños, ilumíname.
Orquídea de mil nubes,
desnúdate, vuelve a tu origen,
agua de mis vigilias,
lluvia mía, amor mío.
Hermoso seas por siempre
en el eterno sueño
de nuestro cielo,
amor.
2
Amor mío, ampárame.
Una piedad sin sombra
de piedad es la vida. Sombra
de mi deseo, rosa de fuego.
Voy a tu lado, amor,
como un desconocido.
Y tú me das la dicha
y tú me das el pan,
la claridad del alba
y el frutal alimento,
dulce amor.
LOVE COMMANDS
Have pity on our love
and care for it, oh Life!
Carlos Pellicer
1
Adorn yourself, my love.
Perfect, beneath the sky, lamp
of a thousand dreams, shine on me.
Orchid of a thousand clouds,
undress yourself, return to your beginnings,
water of my fastings,
my rain, my love.
You're beautiful forever
in the everlasting dream
of our sky,
love.
2
Protect me, my love.
Life is a pity without the shadow
of pity. Shadow
of my desire, a rose of fire.
I go along at your side, love,
like a stranger.
And you give me happiness
and you give me bread,
the brightness of dawn
and fruitful nourishment,
sweet love.
3
Amor mío, obedéceme:
ven despacio, así, lento,
sereno y persuasivo:
Sé dueño de mi alma,
cuando en todo momento
mi alma vive en tu piel.
Vive despacio, amor,
y déjame beber,
muerto de ansia,
dolorido y ardiente,
el dulce vino, el vino
de tu joven imperio,
dueño mío.
4
Amor mío, justifícame,
lléname de razón y de dolor.
Río de nardos, lléname
con tus aguas: ardor de ola,
mátame ...
Amor mío.
Ahora sí, bendíceme
con tus dedos ligeros,
con tus labios de ala,
con tus ojos de aire,
con tu cuerpo invisible,
oh tú, dulce recinto
de cristal y de espuma,
verso mío tembloroso,
amor definitivo.
3
Obey me, my love:
come gently, slowly as such,
serene and persuasively:
I know my soul's owner
since every moment
my soul lives inside your skin.
You live gently, love,
and let me, dead of longing,
in pain and burning,
drink the sweet wine, the wine
of your youthful rule,
my master.
4
Justify me, my love,
fill me with reason and grief.
River of nards, fill me
with your waters: heat of the waves,
kill me ...
My love.
Bless me now, yes,
with your thin fingers,
with your winging lips,
with your eyes of airs,
with your invisible body,
oh you sweet enclosure
of crystal and foam,
my trembling poem,
definitive love.
5
Amor mío, encuéntrame.
Aislado estoy, sediento
de tu virgen presencia,
de tus dientes de hielo.
Hállame, dócil fiera,
bajo la breve sombra de tu pecho,
y mírame morir,
contémplame desnudo
acechando tu danza,
el vuelo de tu pie,
y vuélveme a decir
las sílabas antiguas del alba:
Amor, amor-ternura,
amor-infierno,
desesperado amor.
6
Amor, despiértame
a la hora bendita, alucinada,
en que un hombre solloza
víctima de sí mismo y ábreme
las puertas de la vida.
Yo entraré silencioso
hasta tu corazón, manzana de oro,
en busca de la paz
para mi duelo. Entonces
amor mío, joven mía,
en ráfagas la dicha placentera
será nuestro universo.
Despiértame y espérame,
amoroso amor mío.
5
Meet me, my love.
I'm isolated, thirsty
for your virgin presence,
your icy teeth.
Find me, gentle wild one,
under the brief shadow of your chest,
and watch me dying,
think about me naked
eyeing your dance,
the flight of your feet,
and turn to me speaking
the ancient syllables of dawn:
Love, love-tenderness,
love-hellishness,
hopeless love.
6
Love, wake me
at the blessed deluded hour
when a man sobs,
a victim of himself, and open
the doors of life for me.
I'll enter quietly,
right to your heart, a golden apple,
in search of peace
for my sorrow.
Then my love, my young one,
happiness in pleasing flashes
will be our universe.
Wake me and expect me,
my loving love.
TERNURA
Lo que más breve sea:
la paloma, la flor,
la luna en las pupilas;
lo que tenga la nota más suave:
el ala con la rosa,
los ojos de la estrella;
lo tierno, lo sencillo,
lo que al mirarse tiembla,
lo que se toca y salva
como salvan los ángeles,
como salva el verano
a las almas impuras;
lo que nos da ventura e igualdad
y hace que nuestra vida
tenga el mismo sabor
del cielo y la montaña.
Eso que si besa purifica.
Eso, amiga: tus manos.
TENDERNESS
That which is briefest:
the dove, the flower,
the moon in the eyes;
that which has the smoothest note:
the wing with the rose,
the eyes of a star;
what's tender, what's simple,
what sees itself trembling,
what touches and saves
as angels save,
as summer saves
impure souls;
that which gives us bliss and equality
and makes our life
have the same taste
for sky and mountain.
That which if kissed is cleansed.
That is, sweetheart: your hands.
LA AUSENTE
Arriba del silencio,
con la luz en declive,
mi retrato de niebla.
Puramente un clavel
y una gladiola. Y tú,
dominadora de ti misma,
aguja en mi cerebro,
síntesis de me edad.
La meditación diaria,
como una resbaladiza
palabra de ternura,
se me clava en el pecho:
seguramente oye
la rapidez absurda de mi sangre
o el fin de tu recuerdo
sobre mi piel. Arriba,
donde las palabras se vuelven
pedazos de cielo, un algo
de mi muerte se siente.
Tiniebla tibia, dibujo
de mi voz.
THE MISSING ONE
Upwards of the silence,
with the light slanting down,
my misty likeness.
Merely a carnation
and a gladiola. And you,
dominatrix of yourself,
needle in my mind,
synthesis of my age.
The daily meditation,
like slippery
words of tenderness,
jabs me in the chest:
surely it listens to
the absurd urgency of my blood
or the end of your memory
on my skin. Overhead,
where words turn into
pieces of sky, I sense
a fragment of my demise.
Warm darkness, image
of my voice.
