Summary

This is the first comprehensive book, which covers the major themes of the rapidly emerging field of advanced imaging in Biology and Medicine. The analysis of phenotypic information is increasing in importance in biological research. This is because the growth of information and the increasing use of sophisticated models for understanding complex biological systems is leading to an increased need to apply multifactorial models in which subtle phenotypic outcomes often need to be assessed to compare the effects of multiple genetic or pharmaceutical factors. Such applications will increasingly rely on multiple imaging modalities and will demand high throughput and standardized methods of data analysis. For this reason, a single volume that integrates the use of various imaging modalities with this perspective is timely and useful for a large segment of the biological community.

Author Biography

Christoph W. Sensen works since 2001 as a Professor for Bioinformatics at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine. His main research interest is the modeling and visualization of complex biological and medical phenomena. Initially mostly working on the analysis and annotation of genomic features, he has now expanded his work to include four-dimensional (spatial and temporal) studies of gene expression, proteomic and metabolomic information in the context of disease progress. The visualization tools in his laboratory include the world's first Java 3DTM-enabled CAVE automated virtual reality environment, which is equipped with one of the world's first object oriented models of human anatomy. Dr. Sensen has co-authored numerous scientific publications and has previously edited four books. Benedikt Hallgrimsson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland and completed his studies at the University of Alberta and The University of Chicago. He is a biological anthropologist and evolutionary biologist who combines developmental genetics and bioinformatics with 3D imaging and morphometrics to address the developmental basis as well as evolutionary significance of phenotypic variation and variability. His work has focused on the mammalian craniofacial complex, craniofacial dysmorphology in humans, and skeletal biology and disease and has employed both experimental and comparative approaches. He is based at the University of Calgary where he teaches organismal biology as well as anatomy. He has received teaching awards at both the institutional and international levels He is the editor-in-chief of Evolutionary Biology.
