This volume presents Robinson Ellis's text of theAetna, as well as his masterful translation and critical commentary on the classic work, accompanied by Katharina Volk's discussion of Ellis's scholarly achievements in theAetna, especially in light of his later career and the history of critical engagement with the poem. An overview of theAetnasince Ellis's death and a complete bibliography also accompany the text.

Author Biography

Roger Ellis (1834–1913) was fellow of Trinity College, Oxford and Corpus Christi, where he eventually succeeded Henry Nettleship as Corpus Professor of Latin (1893). He also produced a major edition of Catullus. Katharina Volk is Assistant Professor of Classics at Columbia University, New York and author of The Poetics of Latin Didactic: Lucretius, Vergil, Ovid and Manilius (2002).
