Summary

This book is an outcome of the First International Workshop on Agents for Games and Simulation, AGS 2009, which was held in Budapest, Hungary, in May 2009, as a satellite event of the eight International Conference on Autonomous Agents and MultiAgent Systems, AAMAS 2009.The 11 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 17 initial submissions and complemented by 4 invited lectures not given at the workshop. All articles were thoroughly reviewed and improved, according to the suggestions of the referees.Together the selection of papers in the present volume constitutes a good overview of the state-of-the-art in this area addressing technical, conceptual, and design topics like connecting agent platforms to games and simulation engines; who is in control, are actions synchronous or asynchronous, how to monitor results of actions, can agents communicate through the agent platform, how efficient should the agents be, what information is available for the agents from the game or simulation engine, how to balance reaction to events of the game or simulation with goal directed behavior, ontological differences between agents and game/simulation information, how to design games/simulations containing intelligent agents and how to design agents that are embedded in other systems.
