Author Biography

Al Tompkins is a broadcast veteran. He is the group leader for Broadcast and Online at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. Over a span of twenty-five years, Al has worked as a photojournalist, reporter, producer, special projects reporter, special projects director, and news director. He is the winner of the National Emmy, the Robert F. Kennedy Award, seven National Headline Awards, the Japan Prize, the Iris, three Gabriel Awards, and the Clarion Award. His work has been praised with national awards by the National Bar Association and the National Education Association. In addition to teaching at the Poynter Institute, Al frequently teaches writing, storytelling, and ethics in newsrooms and at workshops across America
