Summary

Written by Hamilton himself to confess to the affair he conducted with Maria Reynolds, Alexander Hamilton: Adultery and Apology is Hamilton’s attempt to defend and rationalize his misdoings, and ultimately salvage what was left of his reputation.

The pamphlet was originally published in 1796 after accusations of the adultery arose. This personal exposé reveals a man, whom the public initially revered as a politician and Founding Father, as a flawed human-being. Within these documents Hamilton describes his exploits in impeccable detail and languid prose, at the risk of tarnishing his public image, to prove to the public that he had nothing to hide.

With a new foreword by Robert Watson, presidential scholar and author of Affairs of State, delve into this exquisite, essential account of history’s most scandalous love affairs.

Author Biography

Alexander Hamilton was a politician, Founding Father, and one of the most controversial figures in American history. He is the subject of numerous works, including Hamilton: The Musical, The Intimate Life of Alexander Hamilton, and the bestselling novel by Elizabeth Cobbs, The Hamilton Affair. In an 1804 duel with Aaron Burr, Hamilton was shot and suffered wounds that would kill him the next day.

Robert P. Watson, PhD, is an American historical scholar, author, professor, media commentator, and former candidate for a seat in the House of Representatives. He has written and edited over thirty-six books, including Affairs of State: The Untold History of Presidential Love, Sex, and Scandal. He has been interviewed by various media outlets for his political and historical commentary, most notably by USA Today, CNN, TIME magazine, and The New York Times. Watson currently teaches American Studies at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.
