Der Band enthalt mehr als 20 ausgewahlte Passagen von Texten, die verschiedenen Gattungen der altislandischen Prosa und Poesie angehoren und einen Einblick in die Vielfalt der Dichtung des alten Island geben. Die einzelnen Textpassagen sind mit einer kurzen Einfuhrung, mit Sacherlauterungen und teilweise auch mit Ubersetzungen versehen. Der lexikographische Teil dient als Glossar zu den Lesebuchtexten, deckt aber als Minimalworterbuch des Altislandischen auch den Basiswortschatz der gesamten (Prosa-)Sprache ab und ermoglicht damit die Lekture weiterer Originaltexte.
