Summary

Although more patients with ovarian cancer are living longer, a majority with advanced ovarian cancer are not cured. The hope is for early diagnosis, but only 25% of these cancers are discovered at an early stage. If the cancer is found and treated before it has spread outside the ovary, 95% of women with the disease will survive at least 5 years. This new volume in the American Cancer Society atlas series, Ovarian Cancer, edited by Dr. Ozols of Philadelphia's Fox Chase Cancer Center, gives you a current overview of the disease and its management. Ovarian Cancer features the perspectives of experts, most of whom are involved in the National Cancer Institute-sponsored Specialized Programs in Research Excellence (SPORE) Program in Ovarian Cancer. Ovarian Cancer mirrors scientific advances made in these areas: understanding of the biology of the disease, discovery of the molecular basis for hereditary ovarian cancer, genetic mutations, randomized clinical trials, key issues in the usage of chemotherapeutic agents, less toxic chemotherapy affording better quality of life, clinical evidence in one group of patients with early-stage disease -- 90% of whom were cured by surgery alone. Featuring more than 300 illustrations, the text covers pathology, biology, epidemiology, genetics, and screening through surgical management, the latest in chemotherapeutic regimens, and finally, palliative care.
