Ana Shirley has just graduated and started her first job. For the next three years, she will direct the Summerside Institute, far from her home and her fiancé. In the letters she writes to Gilbert, she tells him the details of her new life: the quarrels that her presence arouses in the most prominent family in town, the day-to-day life with her elderly landladies and her strict housekeeper, and the touching relationship that she establishes with one of her students.
