Summary

Floramund Fellmeth, an attractive 26-year-old Army nurse, hid under the steps of a bungalow as Japanese bombers attacked the Philippine Islands in 1941. She watched Manila burn from the bow of a ship as the retreating American forces destroyed anything the enemy could use. She waited alone in the Sternberg Hospital nurses' quarters while Japanese troops neared Manila and the Red Cross hurriedly converted an inter-island steamer into a makeshift hospital ship. She supervised Red Cross nurses as they cared for more than two hundred men during a harrowing twenty-seven-day sea journey. Then she designed uniforms and greeted American nurses who arrived in Australia to help Allied Forces in the South Pacific. After returning to the United States, she worked with actress Helen Hayes to recruit nurses, and then took over as chief nurse at Chicago's Gardiner General Hospital, where she met Helen Keller. This fascinating book tells the story of a young woman who assumed incredible responsibilities at an early age. It also explains why this Angel of Bataan and Corregidor never became a prisoner of war.
