Summary

Sara's family isn't safe. In Russia in 1909, the country's leaders encourage soldiers and even neighbors to attack and exploit Jewish people—people like Sara and her family. They leave their home country for a new life in America, but will they find the peace they're looking for? It's strange at first, and Sara wonders if she'll ever feel like she belongs in America. But as she learns English and makes friends at her new school, things begin to look up—until tragedy hits. Her family is grief-stricken. Sara must look within herself for the courage and determination to help her family move forward.

Author Biography

Barbara Stock grew up in Squirrel Hill, a primarily Jewish section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, hearing stories of her parents' childhoods. As an adult, she discovered that her mother knew even more stories, long kept secret. Through hours of conversations with her mother as well as library research, she learned the details that form this book. After leaving Pittsburgh, Stock earned her Ph.D. in psychology and in education from the University of Michigan. She has lived and worked across the United States as well as London, England. Along the way, she was named to Who's Who in Medicine, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who of American Women and International Directory of Distinguished Leadership. Currently she is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Evanston, Illinois. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Illinois Psychology Association, National Register of Health Service Psychologists and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.Stock has enjoyed writing, journaling and rhyming from as far back as she can remember. While her infant son was napping, she wrote as a stringer for the Chicago Tribune. She has also been published in Lilith and Psychotherapy Networker as well as online. In writing this book, Stock combined her love of writing with her fascination with her own family story. When she is not working, Stock hangs out with her family and friends. She enjoys traveling, dining out, reading, learning, walking, journaling and most of all being a grandmother.
