Summary

Historically, western readers have come to stereotype Arab women as 'passive' along a rigid and largely prejudicial binary of active-passive. When Arab women are portrayed in western image bites, they have traditionally appeared veiled and voiceless, their words spoken for them in captions and voice-overs. But where do Arab women stand in current Arab news? Are the western stereotypes reinforced or complicated? The authors provide first time systematic answers to this and other questions. Using empirical, text-mining, and close reading techniques, they unearth from Arab news a host of concepts through which Arab women can be canvassed and they position these concepts in a lively and accessible exchange with the leading scholarship on gender and human rights. They demonstrate that, in Arab news, the largely unheralded achievements of Arab women can be uncovered, yet the many challenges that Arab women, like women worldwide, continue to confront also make their appearance.
