St. Anselm's archiepiscopal career, 1093-1109, incorporated much experience: administrative, as abbot of the large, rich Norman monastery and school of Bec; and intellectual, as a teacher and philosopher and author of many highly regarded theological texts and a collection of hugely popular Prayers and Meditations. This book breaks new ground in showing how this background prepared Anselm for his archiepiscopal career and influenced it. This volume also tells his story of his English years, in the reigns of Kings William Rufus and Henry I, as he saw it himself. The final section of this volume includes a unique selection of Anselm's archiepiscopal letters, drawn primarily from Lambeth Palace Library.
