Summary

Today, in the midst of critical challenges facing the architectural profession-from the economic crisis to an urgent need for longer-lasting, more affordable, and greener construction-architects are compelled to reconsider the relationships between architecture and society, and between buildings, their users, and the environment. No single individual did more to build this sociospatial discourse than Robert Gutman. Sometimes referred to as the sociological father of architecture, Gutman is known for writing and teaching that initiated a conversation about the occupants of buildings and the forms, policies, plans, and theories that architects might shape. A sociologist by training, Gutman infiltrated architecture's ranks in the mid-1960s. Over the next four decades, he played a major role in articulating the interaction between social behavior and the environment: his work demonstrating a relationship between racial segregation and substandard housing was published around the same time that the Civil Rights Act was signed into law and race riots erupted across the United States. Gutman's contribution to Daniel Patrick Moynihan's Toward a National Urban Policy (reprinted in this book) suggested that policy can positively affect social action if it aims to produce ownership among the working poor. In his later years, Robert Gutman's research into the workings of architectural practice and design education helped forge the profession's understanding of itself. Throughout his career Gutman wrote about architecture and taught generations of future architects, primarily at Princeton University's School of Architecture, while still maintaining the "outsider" status that allowed him to see the architectural profession in an insightful, unique, and always honest way.
