Summary

Who isWyland?Artist? Adventurer? Conservationist? Childrenrs"s advocate? It would be difficult to sum up the many facets of an individual who is, without doubt, one of the hardest-working, most prolific people on the planet. Wyland is first and foremost an artist-a marine-life painter, sculptor, and photographer. But those descriptions barely scratch the surface. With 100 monumental Whaling Wall murals in more than a dozen countries under his belt, childrenrs"s-art and science-education tours in 50 states, programming on PBS and Discovery Channelrs"s Animal Planet Network, and one of the most unique nonprofit foundations in America, Wyland spreads a message about art, conservation, and community wherever he goes. In this extraordinary book, the artist pulls back the curtain with never-before-seen photos, insights, memorabilia, and the unbridled passion of a man creating a unique picture of environmental change around the world.

Author Biography

Marine-life artist Wyland has earned the distinction as one of America’s most unique creative in uences and a leading advocate for—an epic series of life-size marine life murals that spans 14 countries on 4 continents and is viewed by an estimated one billion people every year. Hailed a "Marine Michelangelo" by USA Today, Wyland’s work is sought by millions of collectors; and his equally successful Wyland Foundation, in partnership with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is actively engaged in teaching millions of students around the world to become caring, informed stewards of our oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands.

Internationally recognized as an official artist for the 2008 United States Olympic Team, Wyland has been further honored in the Guinness Book of World Records, Who’s Who in American Art, the U.S Department of Commerce/NOAA’s 200th Anniversary Celebration, the Natural World Museum’s "Art In Action" Campaign, and many national and international publications. His 100th Whaling Wall, a 24,000-square-foot series of murals with student artists from 110 countries, was displayed in October 2008 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.; and honored by the National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, White House Council on Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Department of the Interior.
