Summary

Creative non-fiction (or literary non-fiction) is a genre of writing whereby an author reveals a factual subject through novelistic writing (such asThe Suspicions of Mr Whicher). In other words an author may use journalistic research methods to tackle a subject in a factually accurate way, but will empoy literary techniques to make the subject vivid and compelling. It is a genre of writing that is much discussed especially when controversy flares over factual accuracy, the cornerstone of creative nonfiction (for example James Frey's A Million Little Pieces which purported to be a memoir but contained fictionalized events) It is studied on courses and is a rapidly expanding and increasingly popular writing genre. It attracts much critical attention "Creative nonfiction is a form that continues to be examined and redefined as the landscape of media, literature and communications continues to evolve" Columbia College Chicago. An authorative guide to the subject is sorely needed. Written from the authorative stance of the Arvon Foundation, a presitigious writing course, The Arvon Guide to Creative Non-Fiction will offer new insight into the critical impact and nature of, this evolving genre, it will add to the ongoing debate and will offer valuable instruction to authors. The book is dvided into three sections Part 1 - essays on critical issues in the genre Part 2 - Guest Writers Part 3: How-to instruction. Suggested guest authors would include: Kathryn Hughes, Dame Gillian Beer, Elaine Showlater, Francis Spufford, Jennifer Potter, Stevie Davies and Nicholas Murray.
