Summary

The 1980s witnessed the introduction of Asia into the core curriculum of undergraduate institutions throughout the United States. The Columbia Project on Asia in the Core Curriculum, involving over one hundred scholars from 75 undergraduate institutions, has produced three seminal books: Asia: Case Studies in the Social Sciences, Masterworks of Asian Literature in Comparative Perspective, and this, the final volume, Asia in Western and World History. With contributions by over fifty leading scholars, the book is divided into four major sections: I. Asia in Western History, II. Asia in World History, III. Modern Asia: 1600 to 1990, IV. Themes in Asian History. The introductions, essays, essay summaries, and historical timelines of India, China, and Japan make this volume the most comprehensive and accessible guide to Asian history ever produced in English.
