Summary

Since the liberalization of the U.S. immigration law of 1965, Asian Americans in general and several Asian ethnic groups in particular have now emerged as significant minority groups. Although this volume examines Asian Americans overall, chapter authors address the major Asian American groups: Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian. Unique in its approach, Asian Americans looks at the issues and obstacles of each group. Some of the issues explored are occupational and economic adjustment, assimilation and ethnicity, intermarriage, intergroup relations, settlement patterns, and marital and family adjustment. The chapters also discuss the impact of migration on traditional customs and values of Asian Americans as well as their impact on U.S. economy, politics, education, culture, and intergroup relations in cities. Anyone interested in race and ethnic studies, political science, and sociology will find this volume a lucid and fascinating study. "Asian Americans traces contemporary trends and issues in Asian American politics and society. Of special interest is a chapter on Asian Indian Americans; but the changing portraits of Asians from different communities is well-done as a whole and makes for an exceptional collection of scholarly, college-level articles." --The Midwest Book Review "A solid contribution to the literature on race and ethnic relations." --Choice "I believe this to be a very interesting, high-quality and valuable book that will have broad appeal. Pyong Gap Min's scholarship, both on substantive and theoretical matters, is very strong. . . . Students and scholars in race and ethnic relations, ethnic studies, urban studies, immigration, and Asian studies will find Asian Americans highly interesting because it addresses various groups and provides an accessible resource for those interested in a single group, as well as others interested in a comparative perspective." --Steve Gold, Department of Sociology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, and author of Refugee Communities
