Excerpts

Shards of glass scattered across John Brock's chest. Pain seared through his shoulder. Blast! He couldn't tell if his shoulder was broken or not. And he didn't take the time to check, because through the shattered window, someone was groping for his keys ... first a pry bar, now the hand that wielded it. While wrestling with the disembodied hand, John swung his aluminum travel mug up and over his throbbing shoulder, ecstatic that he'd taken his coffee to go. The mug hit with a solid smack, and John grinned in satisfaction at the grunt of pain that followed. Not pausing to weigh the options, John accelerated directly toward the gunman positioned in the building ahead, spoiling the shooter's aim, and then slammed on the brakes. A body hurtled past and onto the asphalt. Gotcha, you git! Reversing, John spun the car 180 degrees, grinding the protesting gearshift straight to second as the staccato of automatic gunfire obliterated the rear window.
