Atlanta's earliest days were spent as little more than a landing site along the Chattaboochee River. But the people who chose to make this area their home would prove to be an indomitable lot, surviving the criticism of sister cities, and destruction during war to become the Capital City and a national leader.

1900-1929
Since the earliest decades of the twentieth century, when the city's population increased to two hundred thousand, Atlanta has represented the biggest concentration of people in Georgia. Atlanta's municipal charms and economic opportunity drew new citizens from the surrounding farms and rural areas of Georgia. To accommodate the influx, the city began to expand in nearly every direction.

1930-49
In the promotional spirit of the great industrial expositions of the late 1800s, the Chamber of Commerce launched the Forward Atlanta campaign in 1926. The idea was simple; advertise and market the city by buying ads in national media extolling the advantages of Atlanta as a place for business. The Campaign is credited with drawing 762 new business and 20,000 new jobs to Atlanta during a time when many other cities were struggling just to survive.

The 1960s
At the beginning of the 1960s, the issue of desegregation was of utmost importance to Atlanta. Mayor Hartsfield worked hard at keeping desegregation efforts moving forward while keeping publicity that might spark a white backlash to a minimum. It was during these years. Atlanta awarded itself the title of the ``City Too Busy to Hate,'' a slogan picked up by the national media.

The 1990s and Beyond
A two-year effort came down to a September morning in 1990, when tens of thousands of Atlantas crowded Underground to watch a live television bookup from Tokyo. The crowd held its breath collectively then exploded in glee when the announcement was made---Atlanta was to host the 1996 Olympic Games, the 100th Anniversary of the Games. It was one of the great moments in Atlanta history. And a great portent of the city's future.
