Summary

Trans-oesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) is being increasingly used inside the operating room. The anesthesiologist is expected to not only perform the TOE examination but understand and interpret the images. Although TOE provides crisp, clean and detailed images, it is not easy to interpret them, especially for the anesthesiologist who is not used to echocardiography. Well defined training for and experience with the technique is necessary. This atlas will go a long way in fulfilling this objective. This atlas contains clearly presented illustrations of the normal as well as the commonly encountered abnormal images, with an emphasis on their quality and concise explanations. These images relate to all valvular and congenital lesions, as well as several other aspects, such as masses, thrombi, and prosthetic valves. There is also a discussion of the principles of echocardiography. It comes in a handy size format so that it can be carried for ready reference, and it is intended for use not only for the trainee anaesthesiologist, but trainee cardiologists and cardiac surgeons will also find it useful.
