Author Biography

Dr. Irwin Schwartz, Ed.D., CSCS, is a health and fitness professional with more than thirty-five years of experience in the field. He created the curriculum for the Wellness and Physical Fitness course at Pace University (Pleasantville, NY) in 2000, and has been teaching the course since then. In 1999, Dr. Schwartz entered an Athletic Training Internship Program and completed more than 1,500 clinical hours in sports medicine. He worked with college athletes and was involved in the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of their sports injuries. In 2000, he earned his Certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In 2008, he became a professional member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). While working as a personal trainer and fitness consultant from 1982 to 2000, Dr. Schwartz wrote and produced two instructional videos and a manual on the safe and proper use of home weight-training equipment. From 1982 to 1991, Dr. Schwartz co-owned and operated Exercise Guidance Associates, Inc. in Chappaqua, NY, where he and his partner sold exercise equipment, designed total fitness programs for their clients, and supervised their workouts. Before joining the faculty at Pace, Dr. Schwartz had worked at Arturo Toscanini Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx since 1968. He served as an assistant principal, health and physical education instructor, team leader, health coordinator and coach.Dr. Schwartz attained a Doctor of Education degree in 1976 from Fordham University. He earned a Master of Science in Health from Herbert H. Lehman College in 1970. In 1968, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Hunter College, where he minored in physiology and anatomy.Dr. Schwartz has expertise in the physiology of muscular activity, the physiology of exercise, physiology and anatomy, kinesiology, the efficiency of human movement, and sports medicine
