This volume is based on an Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) symposium entitled "The Balance of Power in South Asia", held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on October 11-12, 1998. The emergence of India and Pakistan as declared nuclear weapons states in May 1998 has drawn renewed international attention to the subcontinent. The environment has become more hostile, the region's politics more uncertain, and the stakes greater for the international community. This volume, the first of its kind, discusses the rationale behind the decision to conduct nuclear tests and the subsequent impact on the South Asian region and the Arabian Gulf. It offers the perspectives of India, Pakistan, China and the Gulf countries, and examines the event within the theoretical framework of balance of power politics.
