Excerpts

As the Union army, led by General W. T. Sherman, moved through Tennessee toward Georgia, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest conducted a series of cavalry raids to impede communications and interrupt the Union supply lines. Sherman sent General Samuel Sturgis to find Forrest in northern Mississippi and destroy the Confederate army. The armies met at Brice's Crossroads on June 10, 1864, where Forrest and his men soundly defeated Sturgis and his army though they were twice the size of the Confederate force. This battle is still studied today as one of the most effective deployments by a cavalry force. Not only was the Union army defeated, but Forrest captured bountiful supplies, munitions and arms. After the battle, Sturgis was demoted and exiled to meager assignments in the far West. This battle was, in no small part, what contributed to the lore of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
