Summary

Since their emergence from the NY hardcore scene in 1981, the Beastie Boys have been consistent and endlessly provocative mixers of punk and hip hop. Originally hailed as one of the first successful cross-over white rap groups with their first album, License to Ill (1986), they soon became popular with several audiences-hip hop, rock, pop -- and were immediately embraced by MTV. Just as they were being written off as just another popular novelty act, they released Paul's Boutique (1989) which has been recognized as a masterpiece of sampling and postmodern pastiche. Wildly popular for the entire span of their career, they have evolved from bratty white kids crossing the rap line-"Fight For Your Right to Party" being their early anthem-to respected arbiters of cultural cool and artistic integrity.
