Summary

Mark wrote "the beginning of the Gospel" for Christians who thought it was the end. For that he told them a story of another time when Jesus' disciples thought it was the end but turned out to be the beginning. That is why the passion-resurrection of Jesus dominates the Gospel according to Mark. Using rhetorical and literary analysis, Father LaVerdiere introduces Mark's story as the beginning of the Gospel as we enter a new millennium.

Author Biography

Fr. Eugene LaVerdiere, S.S.S., Ph.D., with The Liturgical Press has also published The Eucharist in the New Testament and the Early Church (1996), A Church for All Peoples (editor, 1993), Luke (New Testament Message #5, 1990), Fundamentalism: A Pastoral Concern (1983), and Trumpets of Beaten Metal (1974). From 1983-1988 he was the editor of Emmanuel magazine where he now serves as senior editor. He is an adjunct professor of New Testament studies at Catholic Theological Union and a distinguished lecturer at Fordham University.
