About the Authors

Mel H. Friedman, M.S. has a diversified background in mathematics and has developed test items for Educational Testing Service. His teaching experience is at both the high school and college levels.

Rena Grasso, Ph.D. has taught Writing at all levels (first-year to graduate school) at various colleges and universities for more than twenty-five years. In addition, she is currently tutoring students (middle school through high school) as well as adults, including both native speakers and ESL professionals seeking to improve both work related writing and to pass the TOEFL exams. Dr. Grasso’s experience includes professional grant writing and a range of technical and business writing formats. She has also written essays and articles on history, the arts, and political topics as well as reports and
policy studies on educational issues. Rena Grasso holds an M.A. in Language Studies from Boston University and a Ph.D. from SUNY/Buff alo in Literature and Psychoanalytic Psychology.

Carol Hunter, M.A. is a former History and English teacher, staff developer, literacy resource teacher, and consultant in Albuquerque and San Diego City Schools. She also taught at The University of New Mexico, Chapman University, The College of Santa Fe, and Santa Fe Community College. She has an undergraduate degree in liberal arts, and an M.A. in History from The University of New Mexico. While working for San Diego City Schools, she received a Peer Coach Certificate from San Diego State University.

Laura Meiselman, M.S. has taught math to both regular and special education students in public and independent schools in New York for over 15 years. She has two master’s degrees from Bank Street College of Education, one in Special Education and one in Math Leadership. She is the author of two books: Tic Tac Math: Grades 5–8 and What’s Your Angle? And 9 More Math Games, published by Scholastic, Inc. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her daughter. When she’s not doing curriculum writing or test preparation work, Laura can be found doing yoga, taking cooking classes, or reading.

ABOUT THE PRAXIS SERIES
Praxis is Educational Testing Service’s (ETS) shorthand for Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers. The Praxis Series is a group of teacher licensing tests that ETS developed in concert with states across the nation. There are three categories of tests in the series: Praxis I, Praxis II, and Praxis III. Praxis I includes the paper-based Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) and the Praxis I Computer-Based Tests (CBT). Both versions cover essentially the same subject matter. These exams measure basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills and are often a requirement for admission to a teacher education program.

Praxis II embraces Subject Assessment/Specialty Area Tests, of which the Praxis II ParaPro Assessment is a part. Most Praxis II examinations cover the subject matter that students typically study in teacher education courses such as language acquisition, school curriculum, methods of teaching, and other professional development courses. However, the Praxis II ParaPro Assessment is expressly for prospective and practicing paraprofessionals; it measures both skills and knowledge in reading, mathematics, and writing as well as the ability to apply those skills to the classroom.

Praxis III is different from the multiple-choice and essay tests typically used for assessment purposes. With this assessment, ETS-trained observers evaluate an instructor’s performance in the classroom, using nationally validated criteria. The observers may videotape the lesson, and other teaching experts may critique the resulting tapes.

Who Takes the Test?
Thirty-five states require the Praxis II ParaPro Assessment, which fulfills the mandate of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). In order for a person to qualify as a paraprofessional, one must:
1. complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
2. obtain an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
3. meet a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics
readiness).

When and Where Can I Take the Test?
ETS offers the Praxis II ParaPro Assessment paper-based test four times a year. The paper-based test requires pre-registration. The Internet-based test does not require preregistration but is administered only in participating school districts throughout the year. Contact your district’s administrative office for availability in your area.
