Summary

This new volume of the Biopsy Interpretation Series addresses the frozen section, which is one of several intraoperative consultative options. The frozen section is essential to and part of the practice of every pathologist and is an inseparable aspect of any training program. The demands of patient care in the 21st century require knowledge of the assets and limitations of the frozen section, including the practical techniques of its execution and interpretation and the communication of its results. Put simply, it involves a freezing apparatus to harden tissue, a microtome to shave off thin slices, an H F staining set-up, a microscope, and a pathologist (to interpret the results). It is still regarded as the most definitive intraoperative examination. The proper execution of a frozen section is therefore essential to determine the course of a given surgical procedure. The book features over 300 full-color images.
