Summary

Archibald Rutledge was an extremely popular author and the poet laureate of South Carolina. He wrote over 50 popular titles on the south and southern history in addition to his many books about the sporting life on his famous family plantation in South Carolina. He was one of the most popular and enduring outdoor authors of this century. In 1930, he wrote a collection of dog stories titled Bolio and Other Dogs. The lead story, "The Odyssey of Bolio", is one of the greatest dog stories of all time and is included in this collection, along with "The Philosopher Among Dogs" and "Then Gabriel Blew His Horn". Many of the stories collected here have only appeared in early magazines, and the others are reprinted from some of Rutledge's oldest and rarest books. A number of his hunting stories that appeared in Outdoor Life and Field and Stream have been nearly forgotten. Editor Jim Casada discovered these "lost" stories, and they have been included in this volume. Brett Smith, one of America's finest hunting artists, has painted an original picture for the cover and created a number of etchings especially for this book. Even the most complete Rutledge collection will not include many of these stories, and no story in this book appears in recent reprints of Rutledge material.
