The Alchemy of Stone

Mattie is an intelligent automaton and the most talented alchemist in the thriving metropolis of Ayoona . . . and lately everyone needs her help. The gargoyles are searching for a way to stop their inevitable transformation into stone; the Mechanics and the Alchemists are jockeying for power over the city on the brink of a technological revolution; and as the old order gives way to the new and the magical beasts of burden are displaced by mechanized caterpillars, as the ancient silver is abandoned in favor of anthracite coal, and as the gargoyles' wisdom is replaced by a giant steam-driven Calculator, Mattie finds herself drawn to the revolutionaries' cause and their charismatic leader, Sebastian . . . but all this doesn't sit well with Loharri, the Mechanic who has created Mattie and still has the key to her heart - literally.
