Excerpts

Early Saturday morning in September, Jennifer Sommerset sat on her porch, waiting for her three friends to arrive to spend the day. School had just started two weeks ago, and this was a special three-day weekend due to Labor Day. Jennifer had finished her homework the night before in anticipation of spending all of Saturday with her friends.

Her arm around one knee, the other leg dangling, she sat swinging in the porch swing and daydreaming about the summer fun she had had with her friends. Like many nine-year-olds, Jennifer spent the summer swimming, skating, reading, climbing trees, playing video games, attending camp, and having sleepovers with friends. But she also did other activities that were very important, and some that were very secret.
