Summary

Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny are orphans. Determined to make it on their own, they set out to find a safe place to live. They discover an old, red boxcar that provides shelter from a storm. Against all odds, they make it into their home--and become the Boxcar Children.

Author Biography

Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in 1890 in Putnam, Connecticut, where she lived her whole life. Because of poor health, she did not finish high school. But she loved to read and write, and she wrote her first book when she was just nine years old. When World War I broke out, she was called upon to teach first grade; she continued to teach for thirty-two years, devoting herself to helping children learn while she continued her own writing. She wrote The Boxcar Children because she had always been fascinated by the trains that went right by the Warner home and had often imagined how delightful it would be to live in a caboose or freight car
