Summary

A study of British and American anti-communist thought in the 50 years before the Cold War. It examines socialist, liberal and conservative varieties of anti-communism from the debates of the 1880s, up until the onset of the Cold War after Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech in 1946. In doing so, it analyzes the writings and activities of a wide range of politically attached intellectuals, publicists and politicians. The work shows the centrality of anti-communist thought in the major policy projects of the 20th century, but also paints a picture of a movement deeply divided against itself. The fundamental divisions between socialist, liberal and conservative forms of anti-communism apppear as important explanations for the Cold War itself - an ideological struggle, as much within the broad anti-communist community of the West as against the Soviet Union.
