For the first time the Europeangovernment had sufficient military power to impose its will on hithertosemi-independent local rulers, leading to a fundamental alteration in thepolitical relationships on the island. This volume provides a unique insightinto the Javanese view of events from the vantage point of the Central Javanesecourt of Yogyakarta. The core of the work is a text edition of a diary kept byone of the senior Yogyakarta princes from the time of the British attack to theend of the occupation in 1816.
