Summary

This is my story, but if you are a leader, it is your story too. It’s a story of vision and vulnerability, of being yourself and being betrayed, of crashing and burning and emerging the better for it. —Matthew Cork

Southern California. Palm trees and white teeth. Glimmer and shine and a thriving church. An exhausted pastor. A sudden mutiny. A grown man weeping under a lonely gray sky. The power of taking a stand. A memoir-guidebook, Broken for Good is the portrait of a leader in his darkest hour. Showing us life past the breaking point, Cork and Kemp dare us to live truly. To be vulnerable but free. To take a risk, give ourselves away, and find God at the end of our rope.

There are lots of ministry leadership books about trends and technologies and best practices. But few begin organically: with the “you” that you bring into ministry. Let Matthew’s story help you look in at yourself; it might be just what you need.  With questions for reflection at the end of each chapter, you are invited to relate Matthew’s experiences to your own life and leadership.

Author Biography

MATTHEW CORK has served in a number of key roles over his many years at Friends Church, including: Worship Pastor, Executive Pastor and the position he currently holds, Lead Pastor. Matthew's focus since 2003 has been on the renewal of Friends Church. He has a strong pastor's heart that has led him to be a key part of transitioning a church in crisis. On a trip to India in 2007, Matthew saw firsthand the plight of the Dalit people and the impact education can have on improving their lives. Since then, Friends Church has launched a new vision called Global Freedom and has been instrumental in building a large number of Education Centers throughout India. Matthew lives in Yorba Linda with his wife Mardi and their three children: Nolan, Sophie and Ella.

KENNETH KEMP is Western Regional Director of Development with Operation Mobilization USA and a self-confessed word junky. He has been writing ever since he got recognition in his sixth grade class for an original story he wrote the Christmas in 1959. He went to school too long (Moody Bible Institute (B.A., 1971), UCLA and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.Div., 1974). If he could turn back the clock, he would have been an English major. He gets impatient with pretense. Flight fascinates him. He has too many electronic gadgets. Kenneth watched his life partner, Carolyn, deliver all three of their children. He has been amazed ever since. Now their offspring are producing babies of their own. He lives in Orange County, California.
