At the time of its construction, the Titanic was an engineering wonder. At 882 feet, 8 inches long -- a distance of more than four city blocks -- the ship was the largest ever built. It was also the most luxurious and, supposedly, the safest. It took 3,000 workers at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast almost three years to complete construction.
