Summary

What started as a nearly impossible dream in Cliff Hale's heart nearly seventy years ago has become a reality for generations to enjoy. A breathtaking river; a small cozy cabin; the endless Huron Forest; the unpredictable Michigan weather. Decades of memories have been compiled here to create a book of love, beauty, humor and family bonds. With the world seeming to move faster and becoming more complicated, this heartwarming memoir will take you back to a simpler time and remind us all that the best things in life are indeed free.

Excerpts

One summer in the late '70s when Judy was up north at her rental, she had a free afternoon and timidly drove down the old road; she wanted to see the old log cabin where she, Pat and Shirley used to spend hunting seasons together over a dozen years ago. The cabin was closed up, so she went next door to Emily's place to see if anyone was home there. (Emily is the older German woman who lived next door, who I remember used to bring us homemade cookies in the mornings in her robe and curlers.) Emily answered Judy's knock and the two embraced, after many years of not seeing each other. Judy wanted to go inside the cabin; her curiosity had gotten her this far and now she didn't want to leave without stepping inside. Emily knew the Hales wouldn't mind, and taking her key the two walked over to the cabin and went in. Judy walked to the middle of the quiet old cabin and looked around; the rugs, kitchen table, photographs, cabinets, deer trophy, rocking chairs, it was all the same. Judy stood there for about a minute then putting her hands over her face, burst into tears as the memories of time spent here came flooding back to her. They had been happy, carefree, loving times with family and friends, and the little cottage she had been renting just wasn't the same. She thanked Emily and hugged her again; taking one last look at the black and white picture of Cliff and Helen tacked to the wall, Judy Thomas turned and left the little cabin for the last time.
