Summary

The standard procedure for defining the anatomic extent and severity of coronary artery luminal narrowing is selective coronary angiography. Whilst there are some advantages to coronary angiography, it is invasive and requires a brief period of hospitalisation, making it relatively expensive.Non-invasive techniques of coronary artery lumen imaging, such as multislice computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), offer a genuine alternative. In addition, the ability of multislice CT to image non-calcified plaques may ultimately replace invasive intracoronary ultrasound. As these new technologies are introduced in clinical practice, cardiovascular medicine specialists need to learn about them and be trained in them. This technique-oriented monograph is a reference source for all cardiologists, radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians interested in applying these techniques for screening patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease.
