Summary

This book is the definitive reference on two of the most exciting areas of cardiovascular research - myocardial regeneration and stem cell therapy - for the treatment of disease. Edited by pioneers in the area, with contributions from every major investigator worldwide, it covers:The biology of stem cells The actions of stem cells from the bone marrow, the heart, and embryos on the normal restorative and repair functions of the heart and blood vessels How stem cells could contribute to myocardial recovery in the face of injury and aging How adjuvant therapy with growth factors might enhance stem cell activity in regeneration and repair Clinical applications and clinical experiencesThis fully referenced publication presents the current state of knowledge in both basic science and clinical practice, and is an essential reference for scientists, students, and clinicians.

Author Biography

Annarosa Leri MD is a lead investigator in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the New York Medical College where this field of investigation began. She has made major contributions to our understanding of the basic mechanisms involved in stem cell regenerative therapy for the cardiovascular system. Dr. Leri is Professor of Medicine of the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. She is co-editor and author.

Piero Anversa MD Dr. Anversa is Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at New York Medical College, and is the founder of the field of stem cell therapy and regenerative cardiovascular medicine. In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Anversa received the 2004 Distinguished Scientist Award of the American Heart Association.

Professor William H Frishman MD is one of the leading cardiovascular investigators in the world, with emphasis in the area of cardiovascular therapeutics. He is author, co-author, editor and co-editor of 12 textbooks and 800 original articles and chapters. He is currently supplements editor of the American Journal of Medicine, co-editor of the Year Book of Medicine and co-editor-in-chief of the journal Cardiology in Review.
