Summary

What does it mean to be a slave? To be owned by someone? To be ordered to do whatever the owner wants? And never to be paid for any work at all? For Caroline Quarlls, a teenage slave in St. Louis, Missouri, that was what life was like. Although she was slave, Caroline dreamed of being free. On July 4, 1842, she caught a steamboat all alone, hoping to make that dream come true.

Author Biography

Julia Pferdehirt is an author, educator, and professional storyteller.  The story of Caroline Quarlls is one her favorite successes of Wisconsin's Underground Railroad, and she feels privileged to tell the little-known story of this young woman's courage and determination to take her own freedom. A resident of Madison, Wisconsin, Pferdehirt has also written They Came to Wisconsin, a book about immigrants for a young audience published by Wisconsin Historical Society Press.
