Summary

"Edmund White is one of the best writers of my generation—he's certainly the contemporary American writer I re-read more than any other, and the one whose next book I look forward to reading most."—John Irving

"One of the three or four most virtuosic living writers of sentences in the English language."—Dave Eggers

Edmund White has always been the ideal traveling companion, as he demonstrated in The Flaneur; now he invites the reader to come with him to Florida, the Greek Isles, and Turkey—and into the chaotic gay demimonde of contemporary New York.

Available for the first time in paperback, Chaos is autobiographical fiction that asks the questions: What happens when a respected older man, a product of the liberated 1970s, is incapable of cleaning up his act for the twenty-first century? When he pursues sex with voraciousness his body and his reputation can no longer sustain? In this collection, which features three new, previously unpublished stories, White explores different aspects of aging, romance, and sex.

Edmund White is a 2010 National Book Critics Circle finalist for his memoir City Boy. He also the author of the autobiographical novel A Boy's Own Story and the memoir My Lives, among many other works. He lives in New York City and chairs the creative writing department at Princeton University.
