Summary

Child Fatality Review, which is the result of collaboration between 27 pediatricians, 10 forensic pathologists, 3 coroners, 2 forensic scientists, and an array of other health care, legal, law enforcement, and social service professionals, is the first available text completely devoted to the child fatality review process. It is designed to be the only text current team members, potential team members, and interested nonmembers will need on death review. Illustrated with more that 600 full-color clinical photographs documenting case histories, the book contains a section devoted to common and uncommon causes of child fatalities, including neglect, SIDS, suicide, burning, drowning, infectious diseases, and lightning strikes. This section prepares nonmedical professionals who are not generally exposed to actual deaths for the type of cases they will encounter while on a review team. The book describes in detail the processes that child fatality review teams follow and the roles of each team member, offering best practice procedures to professionals on existing teams or starting new teams and guidance to new members as they determine how they fit into team functioning. To give the reader a thorough understanding of child fatality review, special topics are also addressed, including military approaches to fatality reviews, child fatalities in Indian Country, and international review team functioning. Child Fatality Review: Supplementary CD-ROM is an ideal multimedia tool for developing a child fatality review team or training new members for a wide range of disciplines. It provides useful electronic information for all professionals. Members can test their abilities in reviewing difficult cases with numerous case studies and corresponding photographs. A slide show presentation can be used for self or group education. Resources and legislation information can also be accessed making this a necessary tool for any team. Child Fatality Review is the essential companion for this CD-ROM. This publication contains complete information on child fatality review teams and is designed to serve team members, potential team members, and interested nonmembers as the only text they will need on death review. The volume details common types of child fatality for professionals to use as a reference, including high quality color photographs to help determine whether the fatality was the result of abuse. This reference explains the role of each core member, including child abuse prevention professionals, medical examiners, coroners, pediatricians, prosecutors, law enforcement personnel, mental health professionals, child protection services members, domestic violence and substance abuse experts, vital statistic personnel, educators, and public health workers. The Child Fatality Review Book and Supplementary CD-ROM are valuable teaching tools in university classes and technical facilities. Anyone potentially involved with a child fatality review team should not miss out on these unique resources.
