Summary

This is the true story of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish explorer who landed in Florida in 1528 with an expedition of five hundred men. Only four members of the group survived and traveled 3,000 miles for nine years across the Southwestern United States before finally arriving in Spanish territory below what is now the state of Arizona. Alvar's faith in God enabled him to survive hunger, sickness, and even being a slave. He never lost faith, and he and his companions crossed the southwest by befriending the people there and helping them. Years later, they still remembered him for all he did for them. They named these Spaniards the Children of the Sun.In this volume, Isabel Oxford tells the story of their adventures and hardships, a story that will help us appreciate those who explored our great country and show us that courage and faith can overcome our most difficult challenges.
