Summary

In this first decade of the twenty-first century, the Anglican Communion finds itself strained, in deep crisis-and, some fear, on the brink of disintegration. Disagreements over issues of sexuality, including the ordination of a partnered, openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church in the United States, have resulted in condemnation of the American church by many bishops in the global south, including most bishops in Africa. The one exception, as Harold Lewis points out, is the Church of the Province of Southern Africa. A variety of historical factors have made Southern Africa an anomaly among Anglican provinces in Africa and therefore uniquely positioned, Lewis argues, to become the crucible, the instrument of change and healing, for the Anglican Communion.
