Summary

Winston Churchill, hero to the Western world, also had a dark side. Between 1939 and 1944, while he was brilliantly opposing the genocidal barbarism of the Nazis, Churchill made a series of decisions that directly--and knowingly--resulted in the deaths of some 4 million Indians. Even while the streets of Indian cities were lined with the emaciated bodies of the dead, Churchill callously withheld vital emergency shipments of food that would have saved untold Indian lives. Churchill's Secret Warplaces this overlooked tragedy into the larger context of the Second World War, India's fight for freedom, and Churchill's legacy.
