Summary

As the mayor of Denver in the late 1940s, Quigg Newton's innovations helped streamline and modernize city government. This important biography pays tribute to the mayor's distinguished career and his contibutions to civil service and academia. Newton also served as president of the University of Colorado from 1956 to 1963, where he was instrumental in revitalizing many academic programs, inlcuding the honors program, education, music, history, economics, psychology, and English. He was proud of the campus's advancements in interdisciplinary work—the Institute of Behavioral Science, the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics, the Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research, and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. International education was a high priority for Newton, who helped bring greater emphasis to international activities at CU.

Author Biography

Mark S. Foster recently retired from the University of Colorado at Denver, where he was a professor of history for 33 years. He grew up in the Chicago area and received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. Foster is the author of ten other books, including three biographies. He lives in Denver, Colorado.
