Summary

In the years leading up to the Civil War, Delaware wasessentially divided, much like the nation as a whole. With an industrial northand an agricultural south, the state supported the preservation of the Unionbut many also rejected the emancipation of their slaves. In this uniqueposition, Delaware perplexed both North and South throughout the conflict. Withthe outbreak of war, Delaware sent more of its population to fight for theUnion that any other state. Meanwhile, a large number of southern sympathizerswithin the state were transporting war material to the Confederacy via theIndian River Inlet. Through a series of fascinating and accessible essays, author Michael Morgan traces Delaware’s criticalinvolvement in the conflict, demonstrating the powerful sway of the small butsignificant state in the midst of the nation’s crisis.
