Summary

A professional poet, bird-watcher, and amateur sailor, George Devis enjoys a quiet existence in his native English countryside. George has left the business of righting the world's ills to his beloved sister, Camilla, and her husband, one-time American Country-Western singing sensation Rhydian Walters. As volunteers for the charitable organization PloughShare, they have dedicated their lives to aiding the people of an impoverished African village. During his Christmas visit to Africa, George is happy to see that they are slowly but surely winning their difficult fight, until - before his own horrified eyes - Camilla and Rhydian are brutally executed by a military death squad. Barely escaping the carnage with his two now-orphaned nephews, George is haunted by his sister's fateful words, "there comes a time when you can't not get involved" - and by the specter of Ras Hamil, the ruthless, power-hungry warlord whom the villagers have declared responsible for the murders. Burning for answers and justice, George realizes he must get involved - and forsakes his once-safe existence to follow his sister's crusading footsteps. In America, George's pursuit of Ras Hamil draws the attention of a savvy, sympathetic woman reporter who may or may not be trustworthy, and a media mogul with powerful connections and a hidden agenda. But it also draws George into the line of fire, as a vicious ambush he narrowly survives and a series of attacks and threats convince him that Ras Hamil's deadly reach extends well beyond the hills of Africa. Illicit operations in Africa and abroad are thwarting a massive flow of humanitarian aid and reaping tremendous profits from the venture. George Devis, who has neverbefore tilted at windmills, is taking up the lance to draw upon resources he never knew he had...in order to become the hero he never dreamed he could be.
